Paywalls and Profit

I started a Substack a few months ago as the new home for my Library book project, available for free. I don’t like self-promotion, SEO, or other “personal branding” generally, but I also recognize that, as a freelancer, everything I put online has the potential to “impact my brand.” It’s more important to me that people read what I write than that I earn money from it (and doubly so, since most of my subscribers are friends and family at this point), but in an ideal world I suppose I would like to be a sort of full-time thinker/writer, and I also want to recognize those who have contributed financially to it, so I posted my first writing for paid subscribers this week, discussing roles that are over- or under-paid for their incremental value to society. From my perspective it makes sense to share think-pieces that are outside of the library book project with paid subscribers, as I can produce them more frequently (I’m always thinking too much about something) and have a coherent focus to my most-accessible writing. But maybe that’s backwards, and if my book project work is the attraction to my writing, I should reward paid members with that. More to follow!
